Fixing the Architecture
Lab: Add a FAQ Feature to the Collapsible Content Plugin – Part 2
Video Runtime: 08:00
Sometimes you go down a path with your architecture and then discover that it doesn’t fit your needs. It’s good that the problem happened, as now you and I can walk through the process of fixing the architecture.
The Problem
Our code can render out invalid HTML markup if the author gives us a post ID that does not exist. Why? When requesting the post record using get_post()
, we will get null
back. The post does not exist.
With our current architecture, we call the container view file first and then we go fetch the post record. When this edge case happens, <dl>
is rendered out with nothing within it. That’s invalid HTML markup. Whoops.
Let’s talk through the thought process of fixing the architecture. It’s a good exercise of how to re-think your code and approach.
You get WET when you swim. Stay DRY when you code.
